에 or 에서: the short answer
Use 에 for where something is and for where you are going. Use 에서 for where you do something.
| What the place is | Particle | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Where something is (있다, 없다) | 에 | 열쇠가 서랍에 있어요. |
| Where you are going (가다, 오다) | 에 | 주말에 바다에 가요. |
| Where you do something | 에서 | 저는 카페에서 커피를 마셔요. |
Same place, different job
The particle follows the verb, not the place. 주말에 시장에 가요 is about going to the market, so it takes 에. 언니는 시장에서 쇼핑해요 is about what happens there, so it takes 에서.
Verbs of doing take 에서
If the sentence says what someone does at a place, the place takes 에서. In this drill those verbs are studying, exercising, cooking, shopping, eating and drinking: 공부해요, 운동해요, 요리해요, 쇼핑해요, 먹어요, 마셔요.
에서 with 가다 and 오다
With 가다 and 오다, 에 marks where you are headed. 친구가 한국에 와요 means your friend is coming to Korea. Pick 한국에서 instead and the sentence is about coming from Korea.
