Group big numbers by 만
English groups digits in threes. Korean groups them in fours: 만 is 10,000 and 억 is 100,000,000.
| Price | Korean |
|---|---|
When to say 일
Leave out 일 before 십, 백, 천 and 만: 10,000원 is 만 원 and 1,500원 is 천오백 원. Before 억, keep it: 100,000,000원 is 일억 원. You may also see 일만 원 in formal writing; it is not wrong.
Common mistakes with prices
| You might say | Say | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 십오천 원 | 만 오천 원 | Group by 만, not by thousands |
Korean has no "fifteen hundred" |
No "thirty-five hundred" here either |
| 천만 원 | 백만 원 | Count the zeros in 1,000,000원 |
