Two number systems in one time
Korean reads the hour and the minutes with different numbers:
- The hour, 시, takes a native number from 1 to 12: 한 시, 네 시, 열두 시.
- Minutes, 분, take Sino-Korean numbers: 일곱 시 삼십 분 is 7:30 and 열두 시 오 분 is 12:05.
- For a.m. and p.m., put 오전 or 오후 in front: 오후 세 시 사십오 분 is 3:45 p.m.
- For half past, 일곱 시 반 is as correct as 일곱 시 삼십 분.
This drill uses the 12-hour clock only.
How long: 시간
For a length of time, hours use the counter 시간 with native numbers, and the minutes stay Sino-Korean: 두 시간 is 2 hours and 세 시간 이십 분 is 3 hours 20 minutes.
